EV-Switch / TFI-2xx Manual 240VAC Switch

A. DESCRIPTION:

The EV-Switch tm / TFI-2xx AC Switch Box (EVSTASB-2) is a patented manual AC switch that allows time-sharing of an existing 220-240VAC outlet for two AC loads.

The EVSTASB-2 consists of a NEMA plug cable connection to a 220-240VAC wall outlet, 2 NEMA receptacles: one for dryer, the other for EV charging port, a heavy-duty (Japanese-technology) switch and an optional AC volt-amp-watt meter.

TFI AC Switch Set-up Examples.

The AC meter provides Volt, Amp, Watt measurements (1% accuracy) on the EV side and thus adds convenience and safety enhancement to the system but it is not required for normal system operation.

The user just taps on SEL to scroll through the measurements. Press and hold SEL for three seconds for automatic scrolling of the measurements. Tap SEL again to return to manual scrolling mode.

After 60 seconds in a particular measurement, the AC meter will remember the setting and will power up to that setting after power cycling.

The patented design approach results in the thinnest/smallest housing/box.

Since only one AC load is allowed at any given time, the load time-sharing scheme offers a safe and economical way to use an existing 220-240VAC outlet that is typically already connected to an electric dryer for two AC loads while eliminating the need to upgrade the electrical panel/circuit breaker box [in a house with a 100A electric panel] to safely install additional 220-240VAC outlet(s).

Alternately, load time-sharing may also minimize any upgrade cost by allowing the homeowner to only upgrade minimally (for example, a house with a gas dryer can just add a low-cost 240VAC outlet), then use the 240VAC outlet time-sharing approach to charge [several] electric vehicles.

A typical usage is to time-share an electric dryer and an electric vehicle (EV) charging port.

B. OPERATION:

The User connects EVSTASB-2 to a wall outlet, dryer to Dr side, and EV charging port to EV side. The User should make sure the EVSTASB-2 NEMA plug fits snugly and completely into the 240VAC outlet without any visible gap between them.

The User moves the [heavy-duty] switch to select either the Dr(yer) or EV port.
AC connection is determined by the switch.

When the switch is on Dr side, the (left) LED is turned on and Dr side receptacle gets AC connection. (EV side is completely OFF).

When the switch is on EV side, the AC meter (if used) or an LED is turned on and EV side receptacle gets AC connection. (Dr side is completely OFF).

C. SAFETY FEATURE :

An external fuse is used to protect against any short circuit in the AC volt-amp-watt meter (if used).

D. LIMITATIONS:

  1. It is not advisable that the User move the switch when either Dr or EV port is active due to potential arcing from high current load that may reduce the switch life span.  (In other words, the User should turn off both Dr and EV AC loads before moving the switch).
  2. The manual switch has limited number of operations and is not specified to operate at temperature lower than -10C (14F).

    3. No cascading of 2x EV-Switch tm / TFI-2xx units to get 2x EV charging ports due to lack of system intelligence.

Note: It is possible to cascade 1x EV-Switch tm /  TFI-2xx with 1x EV-Switch tm / TFI-1xx to get 2x EV charging ports.

    4. Any EV charging over-current condition (>30A) for the TFI-2xx Manual Switch is handled by the house 30A circuit-breaker.
